How to create a capsule wardrobe

Creating the ultimate capsule wardrobe
Fast fashion has resulted in lots of us having so many clothes but feeling like we have nothing to wear, or nothing we truly love to wear. Creating a capsule wardrobe takes things back a level, selecting quality timeless pieces you truly love that effortlessly work together to create multiple looks. Leaving you stress free and with something to wear every day of the week, no matter what the occasion. The key to creating a capsule wardrobe is to fall in love with the quality, design, and versatility of every single piece of clothing you own. This is one of the most sustainable and responsible ways to create a wardrobe you love, that’s practical easy to maintain and leaves you feeling great.
Where to start
Figuring out how many items your capsule wardrobe should include is a good place to start, depending on your lifestyle, hobbies, and job this will vary. If you initially aim for around 30-50 pieces of well-chosen items that is typically is enough for most individuals, this includes shoes and jackets.
Another great place to start is with the clothes you already own, select pieces that you truly love, are versatile and can be combined to make a series of looks. Donate or sell any items that no longer fit, you no longer wear or have stains that can’t be removed or are damaged beyond repair. What you are left with can form the basis of your new capsule wardrobe. If you have copies of items, black jeans for example keep your favourite and sell or donate the copy.
Categories
Separating your capsule wardrobe into categories helps to ensure you have enough of each category to create a variety of looks and outfits for all seasons and occasions.
These are the categories we suggest for your capsule wardrobe and the number of items to include in each, every capsule wardrobe will differ to suit the individuals needs and lifestyle, but this is a great place to begin. This capsule wardrobe includes 43 items in total excluding accessories (belts, jewellery etc).
- 13x Tops – to include shirts, blouses, short and long sleave tops – our Women’s white long sleeve shirt is a classic wardrobe staple great for this category.
- 10x Bottoms – to include jeans, trousers, shorts, dungarees, and skirts – Women’s black tailored trousers fit great into this category.
- 5x Jackets – to include blazers, jackets, and coats – the Camarada designer trench coat looks great over any outfit.
- 5x Knits – to include cardigans and jumpers
- 4x Dresses – to include maxi, mini and midi
- 6x Shoes – to include heels, flats, boots, sandals, and trainers
Colours and patterns
To create the best capsule wardrobe, you must consider colours and patterns, selecting a range of colours will ensure you have enough outfits to suit every occasion and keep your look varied. However, when selecting colours and patterns you need to consider how they will look with other items in your wardrobe, having 10 bright patterned tops and 10 bright bottoms that don’t match will cause issues and make it difficult to put a cohesive outfit together, unless you’re going for the mismatch pattern look.
We suggest selecting the following colours as a base for your wardrobe:
- 3-5 neutral colours – select from colours such as: white, ivory, cream, grey, black, nude, tan, beige, chocolate etc.
- 1-3 accent colours including patterns– red, orange, purple, blue, yellow, pinks, green etc.
Choosing new pieces
The key to forming and maintaining a capsule wardrobe is careful selection of any new pieces. Choosing high quality pieces, that will last a lifetime is important, every item must be selected to fit into your chosen colours, style, and design. It is also key to find items that you love to wear and make you feel great, poor quality or cheap materials will only leave you wanting more and dissatisfied with your choice of clothing.
